Walter Pelzer formed part of the core of the Milwaukee School of carving and produced his decoys between the 1920’s and 1950’s (Kangas, Survey 228). Pelzer hollowed his decoys and sculpted them with the high backs and relief-carved wingtips common to the area. His decoys boast realistic heads and extensive carving and painting about the wing and tail feathers. Walter Pelzer may not have produced great quantities of decoys, but those that survived attest to his great talent as a carver.
