On January 13, 1914, Charles Richard Berry Sr. was born in New Castle Delaware. From 1930-32 he was a member of the William Penn High school’s Delaware state basketball and baseball teams. When he entered Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland in 1933 he became a part of the All-Star baseball team. During his senior year he became joined the All-Star football team, which was unusual because he did not play football in high school due to the fact that it was not offered as a sport in Delaware at the time. After he graduated in 1936 he accepted a job as a math teacher in Wicomico County. In 1984 he was elected to the Washington College Athletic Hall of Fame. Both Charles and his wife Ethel enjoyed long careers as educators in Maryland. Throughout his life Berry continued to take an active role in school athletics, and was an avid outdoors-man. This led to his specialization in carving miniature waterfowl. He became the resident carver at the Ward Museum, and a member of the board of trustees. He continued to carve and volunteer at the Ward Museum until his death at the age of 96 in Salisbury, Maryland.
