Lucas Krete, inspired by his father Jeff Krete who has been World Champion Carver in two different divisions, of Cambridge, Ontario, Canada began carving when he was only nine years old. Having been going to competitions with his father since he was a baby, he loved the idea of following in his father’s footsteps. He began competing just a year after beginning to carve, at age 10, and won the Youth II division for ages 8-11. In 2008 he won the same award with a green-winged teal drake carved from tupelo and basswood and painted with oil paint.
Besides carving, Lucas’ other hobbies include hunting and creating miniature airplanes, and he feels both are influenced by his passion for carving decoys. He also enjoys travelling to attend the World Championship Competitions, which inspire him to begin his next piece after arriving back at home. When seeing the Worlds Division Lucas gets excited and said, “It makes me think of what I might do one day.”
