Little information is available on this carver from Bailey’s Island. Mitchell’s over-sized eider hen that is on display was carved ca. 1900. This hen never had a weight and has been marred by only light shot. The large, deep inletted neck supports a head boasting glass eyes. Besides the eider hen, an eider drake with a mussel in its mouth is also attributed to Mitchell. The drake decoy is somewhat unique in that both the head and the mussel were carved from the same piece of wood.
