Roy Maxwell

Very little is known about the decoy carver Roy Maxwell, and some sources find it impossible to authenticate his existence either through family members or genealogical studies of the Lower Mullica River bank. Other sources state that Maxwell lived in Wading River as a guide and decoy maker and worked with the Atlantic City Beach Patrol over the summers. He did his carving in the early 1900’s and carved many birds to sell. Decoys attributed to Maxwell have a distinctive round-ended weight. In 1919, a dozen of his goose decoys sold for $17 (Fleckenstein, New Jersey 23). Records show that a large number of his birds turned up in the rig of H.W. Cain of Atlantic City.
